Review: Surj

ONE WORD. Fuck. Two words. Motherfucking Christ.
Three words. I'm screwed.

Dear lord, after reading "Pennies," I honestly thought I knew the direction Pim and Elder's story was going to take. I had it all mapped out in my head and I couldn't wait to see it all play out in "Dollars." Well knock me down with a feather because I couldn't have got it more wrong if I had tried... lol. Everything about "Dollars" was such a stark contrast to "Pennies." Where "Pennies" had been fast paced, drama filled, savagely violent and horrifically brutal, "Dollars" was a slow burner filled with heart felt uncertainties and an undercurrent of something akin to an almost forbidden love story, with two people fighting their growing feelings for one another. This chapter in Pim and Elder's story definitely surprised me (but in a good way of course). It felt more humane (for want of a better word.) It was raw and emotional but equally heart breaking but for different reasons to book one. This was a book about fear and uncertainty. It was a book about trust and motives but most importantly, it was about two people fighting their demons and trying to get through each and every day without their demons winning.

“You owe me, Pimlico. I told you I wasn’t the hero.”

In true Pepper Winters fashion, "Dollars" really did have my mind swimming with questions. Who was Elder Prest? What were the demons he struggled to keep at bay when he was around Pim? What the hell was he hiding? His character was one that was shrouded in so much mystery and suspense, it near on drove me crazy. I needed to get inside his head and under his skin, more so that what Pepper was allowing. I needed to know what made him blow hot one minute and arctic cold the next?

He wasn't just multifaceted; he was layers upon layers of hypocrisies.

Oh and Pim, boy did my heart break for that girl. She was trying to come to terms with everything that had happened to her but in the same breath, she was faced with a future that was so uncertain. Why had Elder stolen her? What were his intentions? I felt every ounce of Pim's helplessness at a situation she had been thrust into. I felt her fear, her doubt, her anguish and her despair but equally, I felt her anger and her rage. Was this how it was going to be for Pim now or was there a glimmer of hope? Would Elder be her knight in shining armour or would he be the devil in disguise ready to take her back to the pits of hell?

Elder Prest might’ve changed my circumstances,
but he was still a monster I had to survive.

"Dollars" really did turned out to be quite an unexpected, tragically beautiful start to what looks like a heart wrenchingly fantastic love story. Those little glimmers of hope, those tiny butterflies dancing around in my gut, the characters questioning those unexpected emotions they were feeling. I'm giddy with excitement to see what comes next. Oh and as for that ending... oh no... I honestly didn't see that coming. Two steps forward, ten steps back by the looks of things.

"I told you you are worth more than pennies,
yet you cling to a dollar as if it's the sum of your value."

I cannot wait for "Hundreds" that's for sure. I rated "Dollars" ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
