Synopsis:

A New Adult Dark Contemporary Romance, not suitable for people sensitive to grief, slavery, and non consensual sex. A story about finding love in the strangest of places, a will of iron that grows from necessity, and forgiveness that may not be enough.

“My life was complete. Happy, content, everything neat and perfect.
Then it all changed. I was sold.”

Tess Snow has everything she ever wanted: one more semester before a career in property development, a loving boyfriend, and a future dazzling bright with possibility.

For their two year anniversary, Brax surprises Tess with a romantic trip to Mexico. Sandy beaches, delicious cocktails, and soul-connecting sex set the mood for a wonderful holiday. With a full heart, and looking forward to a passion filled week, Tess is on top of the world.

But lusty paradise is shattered.

Kidnapped. Drugged. Stolen. Tess is forced into a world full of darkness and terror.

Captive and alone with no savior, no lover, no faith, no future, Tess evolves from terrified girl to fierce fighter. But no matter her strength, it can’t save her from the horror of being sold.

Can Brax find Tess before she’s broken and ruined, or will Tess’s new owner change her life forever?

Review: Kirsty Lander

I find this a really hard book to review and rate. I was so looking forward to reading it, there had been so much hype and buzz about it on Facebook and Goodreads that I was sure I would love it. Now, don't get me wrong, I did enjoy but I just didn't fall in love with it. I was under the impression that this book was going to be really dark. It certainly did have a dark moment or two but nothing about it had me in shock or wanting to talk away because it was too much. The book does deal with all sorts of horrors - kidnapping, slavery, rape and the likes but I felt like a large chunk of it was actually skimmed over. The actual slavery part didn't last for long and Tess' kidnappers were pretty tame in comparison to some we are used to.

Tess is a 20 year old girl from Australia who lives a simple life with her oh so very perfect boyfriend, Brax. "Brax wanted me. Brax was safe. I loved him in my own way." They didn't have an all consuming, passionate relationship. More a friendship but they cared for each other deeply. Brax surprises Tess with a holiday to Mexico and she can hardly believe it, after struggling to come to terms with sexual fantasies she keeps hidden, maybe this holiday will be the perfect opportunity to talk to Brax about it. Of course, this is where it all goes wrong.

Tess is kidnapped, beaten, stolen and sent away. Branded and tagged. There was no escape, and if she tried to she wouldn't get far.

On to Tess.. I really bloody couldn't stand her LOL. Ugh I know I should feel for the victim and want her to run away as fast as possible but for this chick I just didn't. And unfortunately, that was all she did. I lost count how often she tried to run away from her situation, and yes maybe in the same position I would be doing so as well, but she was just so damn stupid and reckless each time she tried. I wished she would just accept her fate and work out a proper plan if what she really wanted to do was run. I just didn't sympathize with her or care about her that much.

Q.. now, he was another bizarre one. At first, again, I had no feelings toward him whatsoever. We know he has bought Tess, saved her from the Mexicans who had taken her, but he has a secret. What his secret was nobody knew, but thanks to two of his staff, we slowly get snippets in to the real person he is. Maybe he isn't quite the monster Tess thinks he is.

"Who was this man? This conundrum, this enigma. A man so young, but so rich.
A man who accepted women, who lived on his own with a galley of staff.
A man who had more secrets than I ever did with Brax."

Q and Tess were like two peas in a pod. Tess, still harbouring her sexual fantasies, and Q trying so hard to fight his own, when in reality they both wanted the same thing. Q wanted to dominate and Tess was more than willing to be dominated. In a way, this book wasn't a captor and captive story, it was just of two people lost in the world, coming together and fitting together like the perfect puzzle piece. I think this is also another reason it wasn't so dark.. Tess wanted awful things to be done to her, she didn't really want to fight. And Q, well, deep down he wanted to do the awful things, he just didn't feel like he should. He is meant to be saving her after all.

Overall, as I've said, I did enjoy the read it's just that I didn't really connect to the characters or learn to care for them. I wanted a lot more dark.. I wanted to be shocked and I really thought that was going to happen before I started the book. I would love to get inside Q's head some more, the epilogue is actually told from his POV and it was one of my favourite parts. He did interest me and I'm sure I would have preferred reading the story from dual POV so I could see his internal struggles when it came to him dealing with Tess. I am also dying to see where their story goes now they are together. Maybe we will get some more in the future. I hope!
