Review: Cassia Leo's "Relentless" (Shattered Hearts #1)

Relentless (Shattered Hearts #1) by Cassia Leo
4 Hearts Review by Jo Rushton Click Book Cover

Claire Nixon is a twenty-year-old college dropout with a secret.

To Claire, Adam Parker is just another flirty customer at the cafe, until a chance encounter and seemingly innocent comment spurs a bet between them. The bet is simple: If Adam can get Claire to reveal the secret that made her drop out of college, she has to re-enroll. If he doesn’t succeed, she gets to keep her secret and he has to stop stalking her at the cafe.

Claire thinks she has this one in the bag. She’s perfected the art of forgetting her past. But she isn’t prepared for Adam’s relentless pursuit or for him to share his own secrets. And she’s definitely not prepared for her rock star ex, and her secret, to come banging down her door one year later.

Review: Jo Rushton

Relentless is an emotional and heart breaking story about a girl recovering from her past and attempting to live with a secret she has no intention of sharing with anyone. The book is written from Claire’s point of view and begins with with her re-living her childhood memories. This allows the reader to understand her tragic past which ultimately resulted in her being placed in foster care. My heart well and truly went out to Claire for everything she had been through and really helped me to understand her character.

Claire is now living with a friend and working at a coffee shop. She's attempting to get on with life but is still scared by the memories that haunt her and tormented by guilt. She truly believes that when her secret is revealed, no one will understand her or want to know her.

“Everyone thinks that they’ll understand but when you tell them about the
horrible things you’ve done they can’t help but judge or pity you.
I just want to be forgotten and if I’m lucky enough forgiven”

Claire meets Adam at the coffee shop and he turns out to be her new neighbour. He is immediately drawn to her, wanting to get to know her better and find out why she carries such sadness around with her. When Claire just wants to be friends, Adam becomes persistent in his pursuit of her eventually winning her around with his charm and his endless amounts of bad jokes! The couple, of course, fall madly in love and Claire's life becomes a happier one with Adam in it.

“Something magical is happening. I feel deliriously happy for the first time since Chris left”

Adam gives Claire the strength she needs to deal with the scars from her past but she continues to keep hold of the secret refusing to share it. Adam is relentless in his attempts to persuade Claire to share her burden, determined to keep knocking the walls down, brick by brick until she is finally free of whatever it is that torments her:

“You think you want to know what happened, what made me drop out,
but you don’t understand. If I tell you you’ll want nothing more to do with me”

Chris Knight is Claire’s ex-boyfriend who just happens to be a very hot rock star. Chris returns one year after the relationship with Claire ended, determined to win Claire back but what Chris doesn’t realise is that the secret that Claire is holding is about to change his life forever!

This story was a very emotional journey for Claire, ending with her having to make a very difficult and heart breaking decision which is set to continue in the next book "Pieces of You” (shattered Hearts #2). Review to follow soon.

I rated this book 4 Hearts. Lucky for me, book #2 is already out (Pieces of You) so I'm just going to get stuck right in.
