Review: Colleen Hoover's "Without Merit."

Synopsis:

Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.

The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.

Review: Jo

Merit Voss was a quirky character living in an extremely dysfunctional, and also quirky family. So much was going wrong in Merit's world leaving her struggling to deal with her unusual family and crying out for much needed love and affection. The introduction of the gorgeous Sagan into Merit's life gave her some of the attention she so desperately craved. He understood her when no one else could.

"If I dropped out of life, just like I dropped out of school,
everyone’s lives would go on. With or without Merit."

Without Merit was a beautifully written story about family, hope and above all else love. The strength of a family's love and how it impacts on each and every family member. I easily became lost in this story and involved in what was happening between Merit and Sagam. I wouldn't say that this was a full out love story but there was a beautiful relationship developing that ran throughout the novel and I became fully invested in that relationship. I rooted for Merit and Sagan. Merit truly deserved someone as patient and understanding as Sagan by her side.

“Everything you do is weird...It’s my favorite thing about you.”

I've almost read every book that Colleen Hoover has written and I have not once been disappointed. Each story that Colleen creates is wonderfully different and never fails to pull at the heartstrings. She is an author that I will always recommend. If you haven't read this book yet, add it to your TBR's. It was a compelling tale that was well worth the read.

“So many people dream of living in a house with a white picket fence.
Little do they know, there’s no such thing as a perfect family,
no matter how white the picket fence is.”

"Without Merit" gets ❤️❤️❤️❤️ from me.
