Synopsis:

The heart is exquisite.

You’ll never hear anyone wax poetic over an organ quite like they do the heart.

When you’re lost in the world? Follow your heart.

When your love for someone is unwavering, unparalleled and unprecedented? You give them your heart.

As a lead pediatric cardiac surgeon, I knew better than anyone that the heart is equally as powerful as it is delicate.

The heart giveth just as easily as it taketh away.

And until the day Kelly Potter darkened my doorway that was all just part of the job.

She rolled in like a slow evening storm, fierce and beautiful, fighting for the life of her unborn child.

It should have been business as usual.

I was a doctor.

Her child the patient.

But Kelly was more.

She was the one who got away.

I wouldn’t make the same mistake twice.

It didn’t matter what the rules were.

For once, I was listening to my heart.

Review: Surj

I loved the synopsis of Amie Knight's "An Imperfect Heart" and absolutely adored the way the story was executed. This really was a cute, swoony romance with a side order of angst that cropped up every now and again. To be honest I was so invested in the budding connection between Doc and Kelly that I didn't need or crave the heart ache. It was an added bonus of course but it was this couple that had me all kinds of giddy. I mean come on ladies, who doesn't want to read about a sexy paediatric cardiologist who saves the day when it comes to a heavily pregnant soon to be single mom who's unborn baby needs a heart specialist? Oh and did I mention these two had history? Oops, my bad lol.

She thought I didn’t remember her. The truth was, I couldn’t forget her.

I took to both Kelly and Doc like a duck to water. To be honest though, when I was first introduced to Doc, the first thing that came to mind was "asshole." However, within the space of a couple of minutes, I saw a huge change in his manner from complete (dickie bow wearing) dick to big softie with a heart of gold. Oh boy did he having me eating out of the palm of his hands!!! He was just all kinds of delicious and adorable, he really was. He just had a way about him that would make all the women sigh. I loved his little gestures and his nicknames for Kelly.... so cute.

I thought my life was full. But in that moment, I was acutely aware of how
wrong I’d been. I’d been missing her all these years and didn’t even realise it.

Now Kelly was a girl who was living her dream of being a musician. She was seeing the world and partying until suddenly she had a bun in the oven and had to grow up overnight. Kelly had snark and wit that made me smile huge but there was also another side to her. This was a woman who was was selfless, a woman who was willing to sacrifice so much for her baby. A woman who would go to the ends of the earth to give her baby every chance of surviving!!!! I couldn't help but be in awe of her.

That was us. Together we were unstoppable. Apart, we were hopeless.

Told from the past and present and from dual POV, I loved getting into the heads of these two love birds and having a good rummage around. Chapters from the past added an air of mystery to the story because whatever had gone so horribly wrong for the pair after just one night had me intrigued!!! To be honest, like I said earlier, I was completely invested in this couple's connection and whatever had happened way back when (although had piqued my interest) wasn't really a deal breaker in terms of my enjoying the book. In fact for me, I don't think there was any need to stretch it out until the end. I'd have still loved the book had the revelation come sooner (much sooner).

“The drums give life to music. And the heart, it’s the music of life.”

So all in all, a fab second chance, swoony read that I would definitely recommend. This one gets 4❤️'s.
