Synopsis:

We're thirteen girls, captive, slave to our master.
A master we've never seen.

Obedience will become all we know in our shallow existence. It is the only emotion we're permitted to feel. When we're bad, we're punished. When we're good, we're rewarded.  Our scars run deep. Yet we survive, because we have to... because HE teaches us to.

All of us are special, we feel it with everything we are. He has us for a reason, but it's a reason we don't know. We've never seen his face, but we know that something deeply broken lies beneath the darkness. With every touch, with every punishment, we know it. Then something changed.

He showed me who he truly is. Now I want him. I'll go against everything I know to be with him.
A monster.
My monster.

Loving him is a sin, but a sinner I am. I won't stop until I see every part of him. Even the parts he keeps locked deep down inside.

I am Number Thirteen, and this is my story.

Blog Tour Review:

"I know he's a monster, I know it because he's got us here.
No one takes girls unless their monsters."

With a prologue that packed quite the punch, Bella Jewel's "Number Thirteen" definitely peaked my interest. I knew this book had received mixed reviews but to be honest, I tried to steered clear of Goodreads and Amazon, wanting to delve in with an unbiased, clear mind which is exactly what I did. Although this book wasn't quite a 5 Hearts read for me (I still had a few unanswered questions at the end), I still couldn't put the damn thing down. It was addictive reading. There were so many questions swirling around in my head... the main one being how could such a beautiful, sweet boy turn in to what seemed like a cruel, calculated, evil monster?

I am not the kind of man to ride up and change your world with one kiss, with one fuck.
I am darkness in the shadows; I'm the one no one wants to see. I'm the faded man.

Master William bought thirteen girls.. first question: What the hell for? Second question: Why thirteen? What was the significance of this number? Third question: Why couldn't they remember anything? And so the mind f**king started. It was question after question as I made my way through this complex story and the answers weren't coming any time soon. Was that a bad thing... no because it gave me time to get to know the characters... and holy crap because almost everyone of them was damaged in some way.

William's character made my head spin and initially, I just couldn't work him out. One minute he resembled a vicious, snarling beast, then next, he was a gentle giant... I wanted to hate him (I mean some of his actions were so extreme, they made my stomach churn) but the tender side to him made me feel there was so much more to this man... he just couldn't be a Jekyll and Hyde kinda guy... I knew I was missing some vital pieces of information and I had to be patient. As I progressed through this book, I found myself softening towards him, falling for him even but then he'd go and do something that would make my blood boil... I was so confused and I felt my emotions were being pulled left, right and center.

Number Thirteen's character had a back bone and wasn't going to take her situation lying down. She was desperate to know about her past and struggled with the fact that this knowledge was in the hands of her master... the man she initially despised but was somehow drawn to. She was feisty and definitely had guts but that also meant that more often than not she landed herself in trouble... a whole heap of trouble.

This one has a determination I don't see in the other girls. She's got courage.
She'll be far more of a challenge to break. But I will break her.

I admired her tenacity, her bulldog spirit and the fact she never gave up. But even the strongest have the potential to break and when Number Thirteen's willpower wavered, I felt devastated for her.

The relationship between William and Number Thirteen wasn't instant. Yes from the word go, she was special to him but not for the reasons you would think and as such there was no insta love and definitely no immediate sexual chemistry that left my heart in desperate need of beta blockers!!!  Nope, there were however a few curve balls thrown into this one to spice things up a bit and it was that that left me with a nervousness that I couldn't shake. This would not be a straight forward romance... not by a long shot and I wondered whether it could ever work. William believed no one could ever love him. Number Thirteen begged to differ. She saw something that was beautiful both inside and out and her determination meant she wasn't going to give up without a fight.... but a fight is what it would take and so it began.

A beautiful heart can never love a dark heart. But a dark heart can crave a beautiful one,
and it will. I will crave you, Beauty.

I loved watching the bond grow between thirteen girls who had no recollection of their pasts. It was like each of them was given a clean slate. They had so much in common and it wasn't just the fact that they were being held captive. Nope, there was so much more to their stories and it was brutal. Part of me was glad they couldn't remember because when the flashbacks started, I could see just how damaged each of these girls was and it did not make for easy reading.

As much as "Number Thirteen" was horrific, mind f**king and absolutely twisted, I wouldn't necessarily say it was a dark read. Yes there were elements of darkness within the pages but there was so much more to this story than just that. This was a story about second chances in life, it was about new beginnings, it was about not letting the past dictate your future and it was absolutely about hope. I loved how this story unraveled and as the plot thickened, I just knew there was still so much I had yet to uncover. The twists just added to the mystery and intrigue and the craziness that was Master William definitely helped hold my attention.

The supporting characters in this book all added something to the story line but it was William's brother Ben who sent me completely giddy. I'm sooo hoping he gets his own book along with Number Twelve.

If you're looking for something a little different in your next read, then I would say definitely pick this book up. I rated "Number Thirteen" 4 Hearts.

It’s in that moment I just see him for what he is: a jagged piece of glass that can never be glued back into its spot because it’s not perfect. It has rough edges, even though the middle is still stunning. I’m a piece of jagged glass, too. Maybe together we can find a way to fit.
