Review: Surj Harvey

Kitty French you've completely blown me away and exceeded all of my expectations when it comes to the sequel to "Knight & Play."

"Who the fuck is Lucien Knight?"

And what an opening line to begin my roller coaster of a ride.... a ride I did not want to get off. From the first page to the last, I was hooked because Kitty would not take this book in the direction I wanted it to go!!!! Running theme???? Oh yes because she did the very same in "Knight & Play." This book was full of "Will they? ... won't they?" and by the end my nerves were well and truly shredded but I loved every second. I'm so glad the author didn't take the conventional route and have them try and make it as a couple because that would never have worked. Instead, she took the path that was more natural and more realistic for the characters I had grown to love, even if it did tug at the heart strings a few times.

"Knight & Stay" began literally where book #1 finished, with Lucien knocking on Sophie's door and throwing up a complete shit storm. Everything came out in the wash and Sophie was left with nothing. Her husband left and the guilt of what she herself had done meant that she was not about to go running into the arms of Lucien. This is what I loved about her character. She did feel guilt for cheating and she openly admitted that she couldn't just turn off her feelings for Daniel (the TWAT!!!). They'd been together for years. I admired her honesty.

Sophie was much stronger than she gave herself credit for and when her path did finally cross with Lucien, she created boundaries and rules and she was hell bent on not crossing them. No kissing, no touching and definitely no flirting!!! Easier said than done when your "beautiful viking could melt your knickers at twenty paces."

The plain fact was that this thing between them wasn't just basic chemistry. It was
lethal, combustible dynamite, and it was only going to be made ten times more difficult by denial.

All those feelings, that connection, that lust.... it was all still there simmering under the surface, just waiting. So what would break her resolve? A business trip to Paris of course! I knew this trip would be more than just business and holy hell it was. Lucien Knight knew how to show a girl a good time, and just when I thought he'd taught Sophie everything he possibly could, he gave her more!!! So much more. After reading this, the very glance at a champagne bottle will make you blush!!!!

The tables had well and truly turned as Lucien took back the reins and began calling the shots. That side of him sent me all smushy ... the way he was so in charge... so masterful.... so dominating (fans self). The passion Sophie and Lucien shared remained hot, intense, sexy and erotic but as I read on, I kept thinking, how long would their relationship remain centered around sex? How long would they suppress their feelings? It had been plain as day since the initial separation that both had struggled with out the other but Lucien had always made it clear:

"Isn't there something refreshingly honest about saying 'I want sex with you now,
but that doesn't mean I'm going to want sex with you for the rest of my life’?"

It was words like these that crushed my heart. Lucien Knight, my beautifully broken hero just wouldn't do commitment and he would  NOT DO LOVE. Every now and again, I saw a very small glimmer of something more from him but as quickly as it surfaced, it was gone, his mask firmly back in place.

“Theirs was a closeness that went way beyond physical proximity.
She was under his skin. Moving closer to his heart. He just didn’t know it yet,
because no one else had ever found the pathway before.”

Sophie meant more to him than he would ever let on, than he would ever admit to himself and so the ultimate sacrifice was made.... my stomach dropped and I could have screamed blue murder I was so angry.

Kitty French was going to make me wait for what I wanted but patience is not a virtue I possess and so that knot in my stomach grew ever tighter. She even threw a couple of huge curve balls in for good measure... I don't think I could have read any faster if I tried. This book had me laughing (the eggs in the restaurant were just hilarious), there were moments I was reeling from sheer anger, where I could feel my face getting hotter, where my ears burnt and where my heart beat thumped loud in my head, and there really were moments that were soul destroying. Kitty left me on the edge until the end of the book..... and I mean right until the end!!! Thank god, this is the last book for Sophie and Lucien though. The epilogue was just perfect and gave me the ending I wanted and that the characters deserved. A well written, emotional, nervous, sexy read with brilliant character and story development.
I rated "Knight & Stay" 5 toe curling Hearts!!!!
